Matthew Newman

Founder & Head of Student Volunteers

Matthew, a young leader from Toronto, Canada, embodies a humble spirit of service. Balancing high school and part-time work, he has quietly led the Newman Global Initiative since 2016, coordinating donations for health, education, and refugee aid programs. In 2019, he partnered with CNN Hero Dr. Ricardo Pun-Chong to raise funds for Inspira, benefiting over 1,000 families in Peru. His dedication extends beyond borders, supporting organizations like the Refugee & Immigrant Assistance Center and Shanti Bhavan School.

Despite his many accomplishments, Matthew views them as opportunities to serve others. Whether leading “Stop the Stigma” mental health campaigns or excelling as a two-time MVP on his high school ski team, he encourages those around him to use their gifts for the greater good. His work with Mercedes Tibollo to support Inspira and the Caritas School of Life reflects his deep commitment to making a difference.

Mercedes Tibollo

Managing Director, Global Strategies

Mercedes Tibollo is the Managing Director of Global Strategies at the Newman Global Initiative. Her background includes studying Biology and Philosophy at St. Francis Xavier University and Biomedical Ethics at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

A newly published author, Mercedes penned the thought-provoking book Meditations from the Eye of the Storm, reflecting her deep engagement with philosophy, personal growth, and spirituality. She recently presented on the ethical foundations of Forensic Psychiatry at the International Congress of Law and Mental Health in Barcelona, Spain.

Mercedes’ work is driven by a profound commitment to philanthropy, medicine, and philosophy. This aligns perfectly with her leadership role at the Newman Global Initiative, where she focuses on developing and implementing global strategies. Earlier this year, she founded the WE CAN HELP FOUNDATION, which provides financial assistance to cancer patients for treatments not covered by provincial health insurance.

Ilaria DiBattista

Student President & Systems Architect

Ilaria blends academic excellence with a strong commitment to social change. Her volunteer work in mental health and addiction, paired with her achievements as a swimmer representing Canada in the Maccabiah Games, highlights her diverse talents.

Ilaria’s passion for mental health advocacy extends beyond personal interest. She has been pivotal in organizing events for mental health and addiction organizations and launched “Project Butterfly,” an online initiative aimed at enhancing reading comprehension and addressing educational disparities.

Beyond grassroots activism, Ilaria has partnered with renowned fashion brands Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo, leveraging these collaborations to amplify awareness and fundraising for mental health causes. By aligning with global names, she extends her advocacy to a broader audience.

Balancing a busy schedule, Ilaria remains focused on her academic and philanthropic goals.

Megan Rajkumar

Student Vice President (USA)

Megan is a high-achieving high school student in Orlando, Florida, and an active leader in the Newman Global Initiative (NGI) since 2021. A member of the National Society of High School Scholars, she also participates in student government, demonstrating her commitment to service and leadership.

Megan’s passion for philanthropy began at age 10. At NGI, she leads “Mental Health Matters” campaigns and contributes to global projects, striving to make a positive impact. Known for her creative problem-solving, Megan initiates community projects and mobilizes resources, inspiring her peers to support various causes. Her leadership is evident both in her school and the wider community.

Madelyn Rosso

Head of Food Initiatives

Madelyn, a high-achieving student from Vaughan, Ontario, has made a big impact through the Newman Global Initiative (NGI) since 2020. Her devotion to mental health activism is evident in her work with the “My Mental Health Matters” campaign and her support for women’s programs. Madelyn also leads many of our food-related initiatives, particularly the Inspira meal program in Peru.

A driven soccer player, Madelyn balances her athletic pursuits with academic excellence and extracurricular involvement. Her discipline and leadership complement her academic successes and aspirations for a future career in public accounting. Madelyn is a well-rounded individual dedicated to making a difference.

Emma Rosso

Student Vice President (Canada)

Emma is a compassionate student dedicated to helping others. From a young age, she has actively supported Toronto’s homeless and co-led a mental health campaign for the Caritas School of Life. Emma and her sisters create and sell tie-dye shirts, donating the proceeds to the Hospital for Sick Children.

Currently attending a Catholic high school in Vaughan, Emma is working towards her black belt in karate, demonstrating her discipline and leadership. She actively recruits volunteers and organizes events, embodying a spirit of service. Emma inspires others and has the potential to create positive change.

Eric Newman

Junior Lead Project Capricorn

Eric is a 9th-grade student from Toronto, known for his ability as a competitive mogul skier. He won a silver medal in the combined event at the 2024 Canadian National Jr. Moguls. Eric’s journey in fundraising and volunteering began at the age of 9, and he continues to support various organizations, including NGI, Caritas School of Life, Inspira, Shanti Bhavan, and Meagan’s Hug. Beyond his athletic and philanthropic pursuits, Eric also has a keen interest in business and is a big fan of horse racing. Eric recently joined forces with Mercedes Tibollo to help with the WE CAN HELP FOUNDATION.

Miguel Ângelo de Castro

Health Ambassador (Brazil)

Miguel, a medical student at PUCRS in Brazil, is committed to improving community health. He has a great interest in the area of mental health and public health. He contributes to the Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Program (ProDAH), supporting research, teaching, and patient care. He also conducts research on childhood respiratory diseases like asthma and cystic fibrosis at the Infant Center and HSL/PUC, focusing on prevention and treatment. As our Health Ambassador in Brazil, Miguel plays a key role in expanding NGI’s global impact.

Nicole De Marco

Head of Community Engagement

Nicole, a compassionate senior at a Lasallian high school in Toronto, leads “The Lotus Project” to raise awareness for Crohn’s and Colitis, inspired by her mother’s experience. A dedicated volunteer, she tutors students privately, through Kumon, and at an after-school club she founded at St. Alphonsus School. Excelling academically and active in DECA, Nicole also works as a swim instructor at Davina’s Swim House, where she has earned certifications in Bronze Cross and First Aid. Her diverse experiences and commitment to service demonstrate her potential to make a meaningful impact.

Matteo Esposito

Fundraising Volunteer

Matteo is a 12th-grade student from Vaughan, Ontario, who demonstrates leadership both in the classroom and in his community. An honor roll student with aspirations in business, he has been an active volunteer since 2018. Matteo’s organizational skills and dedication make him a valuable asset in event operations. He is also passionate about supporting mental health and addiction initiatives, where he focuses on raising awareness and providing support. In his free time, Matteo enjoys playing golf.  

Nicole Newman

Junior Lead Project Butterfly

Nicole, an 9th-grade student, has been a dedicated volunteer since the age of 9 and is also the twin sister of Eric. She is a dynamic speaker who addresses a range of mental health issues, including human trafficking, the opioid crisis, and cyberbullying. Outside of her philanthropic work, Nicole enjoys sports such as volleyball, golf, and snowboarding. She actively contributes to fundraising and volunteer efforts for NGI, Caritas School of Life, Inspira, and Shanti Bhavan. Additionally, Nicole volunteers her time tutoring both Math and English to peers and younger students.

Matteo Triassi

Junior Volunteer

Matteo, a dedicated student, became a part of our team in 2021 and has been an active volunteer ever since. He plays a crucial role in our “My Mental Health Matters” campaigns and contributes significantly to fundraising efforts for Shanti Bhavan textbooks and Caritas School of Life detox beds. Additionally, Matteo has demonstrated exceptional speaking skills as one of the keynote speakers at our 2023 in-person event, focusing on mental health and addiction. Outside of his philanthropic commitments, Matteo is a competitive hockey player and a passionate skier.

Ishan Kenth

Junior Volunteer 

Ishan is a grade 10 student at a specialized science and technology high school in Brampton, Ontario. Passionate about coding and robotics, he shares his enthusiasm by volunteering with Brampton Library’s free LEGO robotics programs. Ishan also believes in giving back to his community through local clean-up initiatives. When he’s not building robots or improving his community, you can find him on the basketball court or soccer field. Ishan is excited to join the team and contribute his skills to the Project Butterfly initiative, especially in helping younger children learn.  

Alessia Marciano

Student Volunteer

Alessia, a highly motivated senior and active DECA participant at De La Salle College, is committed to making a beneficial impact around the globe. Dedicated to spreading positivity among young children, she tutors elementary students at St. Alphonsus School and manages the Girls’ Flag Football team at De La Salle. Through a co-founded “Path to Wellness” Initiative, Alessia aims to spread awareness regarding health issues that affect her community. Aside from volunteering, she is currently working towards her Level 9 Piano RCM certification. Her enjoyment of school and community involvement showcase her eagerness to apply these skills to a worthwhile cause.

Nayha Gill

Fundraiser

Nayha Gill, an 11th-grade student, is an honors student with distinction who excels in both academics and extracurricular activities. A regional and provincial DECA champion, Nayha is also a member of her school’s mock trial team. She has been a competitive swimmer with MSSAC and plays rugby, basketball, volleyball, and soccer at Mentor College. Nayha works as a certified lifeguard and swim instructor and dedicates her weekends to volunteering at The Shores Retirement Residence and the gurdwara. A travel enthusiast, she has visited over 13 countries, and she has been playing the piano since the age of five, currently pursuing Grade 6 at the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Daniel Reyes Calderon

Junior Global Ambassador

A 13-year-old from Maple, Ontario, Daniel is passionate about sports, particularly soccer. As an aspiring goalkeeper playing at the representative level, he’s constantly improving his skills. Daniel is also leading NGI’s first major “Global Ambassador” program, an initiative to provide 100 desks to a school in Honduras.

Beyond the soccer field, Daniel is working towards his Bronze Medallion to become a certified Swim Instructor and Lifeguard. Fluent in both French and English, he’s also learning Spanish to connect with his Hispanic heritage.

Alessia Rosso

Junior Lead “OpenArms” Canada

Since the age of 11, Alessia has been a dedicated volunteer with NGI, actively participating in mental health initiatives, educational programs, and Project Inspira in Peru. Now a freshman in high school, Alessia excels academically and enjoys reading and swimming. In 2024, she was recognized for her contributions by receiving her middle school’s community service award and the honor of being class valedictorian. Alessia also has a deep appreciation for culture and loves traveling, especially visiting her grandparents’ home in Southern Italy. With a keen interest in science, she aspires to pursue a career in the health professions.

James McCormick

Junior Volunteer Food Security

James McCormick is a dedicated volunteer from rural Southwestern Ontario with a passion for community service and a particular interest in food security initiatives.  He has a long history of supporting impactful projects, notably contributing to the NGI’s Project Capricorn and The Lotus Project.  When he’s not volunteering his time, James enjoys the simple pleasures of rural life, including farming, watching and playing hockey, and cheering on his local soccer team – of which he was a provincial championship silver medalist.  His commitment to helping others and his love for his community make him a valuable asset to any endeavor.

Karmin Kenth

Head of the Active Alumni Team

Karmin is a dedicated student at McMaster University, pursuing an Honours Life Science degree with a focus on mental health. Passionate about improving mental health care, she contributed to research assessing primary care access and its impact on mood disorders.

Beyond academics, Karmin volunteers with the university science orientation committee, supporting new students, and at a local hospital’s fracture clinic, gaining hands-on patient care experience. These experiences have developed her teamwork and empathy, complementing her academic pursuits. Karmin aspires to a career in dentistry, driven to make a lasting difference in healthcare

Maguire Ryan

Maguire, an honors student at McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management, balances academic excellence with national-level mogul skiing success. A former U16 Ontario Provincial Mogul Champion, he maintains a top FIS ranking despite being one of the youngest male competitors.

Beyond skiing, Maguire participates in competitive basketball and works as a restaurant host. He played a key role in developing Project Capricorn for the Newman Global Initiative, a mentorship program addressing mental health and academics for student-athletes, recognized by Ontario’s Minister of Mental Health & Addiction.

Anthony Richardson

Anthony, hailing from Houston, Texas, is a passionate basketball enthusiast who has excelled in the sport. Currently pursuing a degree in healthcare, he aspires to make a positive impact in the medical field. An early and enthusiastic contributor to the Newman Global Initiative (NGI), Anthony has actively participated in various community projects, including food drives, seniors’ initiatives, and refugee support programs. His dedication to both athletics and community service showcases his well-rounded nature and commitment to making a difference.

Ava Rosso

Ava is an undergraduate psychology student at TMU in Toronto, fueling her passion for understanding the human mind. A dedicated volunteer since her early teens, Ava actively participates in numerous community initiatives, including the Newman Global Initiative’s (NGI) “Stop the Stigma” campaigns. Her commitment to mental health advocacy is unwavering, reflected in her fundraising efforts for detox beds at Caritas School of Life and textbooks for Shanti Bhavan in India.

Beyond her academic and philanthropic pursuits, Ava balances her time with a part-time job and enjoys immersing herself in the world of literature. An avid swimmer, she also finds joy and relaxation in staying active through sports. With her diverse interests and unwavering dedication to making a difference, Ava is a shining example of a well-rounded and compassionate individual.

Luca Rea

Luca, a B.Comm student and former student president of the Newman Global Initiative (NGI), is a dedicated leader and community advocate. Since 2018, he has played a pivotal role in NGI’s mental health and addiction programs, raising awareness and spearheading projects like the “My Mental Health Matters” campaign and initiatives focused on seniors.

A skilled hockey player, Luca balances academics and athletics with ease. He leads clothing drives within NGI and is a vocal advocate for mental health, particularly among older adults. His dedication earned him a prestigious community service award in 2023.

Despite his numerous achievements, Luca remains focused on the future, exploring opportunities in business or mathematics and committed to making a positive impact through volunteering.

Sofia Esposito

Sofia, a passionate supporter of the Newman Global Initiative since the age of 12, was the first student to collaborate with Matthew and remains a dedicated advocate. Currently pursuing a Criminology degree at York University, Sofia’s diverse interests span from social justice to the dynamic world of beauty and cosmetics. Her entrepreneurial spirit shines through as she explores innovative ventures in this field, while her love for soccer keeps her grounded and active.

A loyal friend and valued member of the Newman Global community, Sofia’s contributions have been instrumental in the initiative’s success. With her drive and diverse passions, she is poised to make a meaningful impact in both her academic and entrepreneurial endeavors.

Kabeer Gill

Kabeer, a business student at Western University’s Ivey Business School, is a former leader of the Newman Global Initiative’s fundraising and mental health advocacy efforts. A multi-sport athlete and accomplished student, Kabeer also actively volunteers in his community, including coaching youth football and teaching swimming. He has a strong interest in business, demonstrated by his achievements in DECA and his participation in an investment club. Since 2019, Kabeer has played a key role in raising awareness for mental health and addiction, notably through NGI’s “Stop the Stigma” campaigns. His fundraising efforts have supported various organizations providing essential resources to those in need.

Amrit Kenth

Head of Global Health Projects

Amrit is a medical student with a passion for robotics, healthcare, and community development. A former member of Team Canada’s VEX and FIRST Robotics teams, she has a proven track record of success in STEM. Amrit’s dedication to service began in middle school with fundraising for a water well in Ecuador and continued with her contributions to building a hospital in Peru. She is an active volunteer with St. John Ambulance, where she played a key role in administering vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Amrit is committed to making a lasting impact by identifying and supporting small-scale healthcare initiatives in developing countries.
